Trincomalee, the capital of the east, is full of character. Its deep-water harbour is amongst Asia’s finest and tourists who venture this far, usually head to the serene beachside hamlets of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. The charming coastal scenery serves as a perfect backdrop for the colonial-era villas, churches, temples and the old fort here. It is also the world’s best place to spot Blue Whales.
The historical Tamil village of Nilaveli boasts a rich biodiversity – the Pigeon Island National Park (a marine national park) is located here.
Arugam Bay is a hotspot for surfing and many people rate it as the country’s best surfing destination. This tranquil place also serves as the perfect base camp for visiting the national parks of Lahugala and Yala East.
While travelling up coast to Trincomale, Batticaloa is a fine place to break your journey. This nondescript town is dotted with a medley of historical sites, including a Dutch fort and temples.
The serene strip of Kuchchaveli Beach is dotted with hotels and guest houses, making it a fine seaside holiday destination. There are facilities for water sports and other beach activities as well.
