Whether you are looking for a day hike or a more challenging adventure, Bhutan is a perfect destination for your consideration. Clear and beautiful mountain lakes, majestic glaciers and some of the world’s most endangered species await you in the mountainous amphitheatre of the Himalayas.
There are several options available, but here are our four favorite treks.
The Jhomolhari Trek is typically 8 days and is popular because it is moderately challenging. You can also plan your trekking adventure with the Jomolhari Mountain Festival which is an annual event that celebrates the local culture of the small villages near the base of Jomolhari.
Another popular trek is the Druk Path trail, which runs through alpine forests and passes several alpine lakes teeming with trout. As you climb down towards Thimphu Valley, feast your eyes upon the magnificent of Mount Gangkar Puensum. At 7570m (24,836 feet), it is Bhutan’s tallest peak and perhaps the world’s highest unclimbed mountain.
The jaded trekker may want to try the Snowman Trek, supposed to be one of the toughest treks in the world.
And while on the Dagala Thousand Lakes trek you might not see exactly one thousand lakes, this should not deter you. For nature lovers who truly appreciate the great outdoors, endlessly photogenic landscapes, exotic flora and fauna and want a healthy dollop of Bhutanese history and culture on top, this is the ideal trek.
We can only scratch the surface of the amazing things in store when you choose this Himalayan haven for your next adventure. If you want treks that are diverse, exotic and out of the ordinary, Bhutan is your Nirvana. And if you want the concept of Nirvana explained, there are plenty of friendly Buddhist monks here who will be happy to oblige!
