Bhutan has many options for those seeking a place of solace, rest and recuperation. Whether it’s peaceful, contemplative meditation, a relaxing soak in a mineral hot spring bath or the all- natural remedies of traditional medicine, the country is a perfect getaway to revive and rejuvenate your body and spirit.
The traditional medicine of Bhutan is known as Sowa Rigpa and dates back to the 17th century when it first split from it Tibetan origins. Bhutan’s natural environment, with its exceptionally rich flora has enabled the development of an unparalleled pharmacopoeia. Another popular attraction are the hot springs, known as Tshachus which are found all over the Kingdom. These springs have medicinal properties and the Bhutanese people have been using them for centuries. These waters are supposed to cure various diseases, including arthritis, body aches, and sinus troubles. No wonder, during winter months, people flock to the streams.
The meditation and mediation retreats are also very popular. As Bhutan is among the last Vajrayana Buddhism strongholds, the country is full of small retreat centers and hermitages. These are usually located next to temples, monasteries and monastic schools. Devout Buddhists even spend months meditating in the mountains, while visitors find them to be veritable sanctuaries of peace and tranquility, far removed from the mundane worries of life.
A trip to Bhutan is not about escaping reality. But surrounded by monks strolling on the streets and stunning landscape is a good start towards the realization that there’s a larger context to your own personal journey. Cultivating inner peace is borne from the feeling of being blessed – a refined appreciation for the nature of life. Isn’t this such a beautiful way to look at the world?
