Kathakali is poetry in motion and represents the age-old traditions and cultures of the state. With strong facial expressions and elegant hand gestures, the artists work their feet to the tunes of classical Carnatic music to enact for you tales from ancient Indian mythology. It takes several days of practice to perfect the striking eye-movements and facial expressions that are pivotal to a Kathakali performance.
What makes Kathakali so distinct and spectacular to watch, are the elaborate costumes and loud make-up that define each one of the characters. So, if there is a performer with a flowing beard and a splash of red on his green face, you know he is playing the bad guy. Sans the two, he is the good guy. The female characters on the other hand, flaunt lustrous yellow faces and attractive costumes. And if you are an inquisitive person, you can also talk to the artists while they are getting their make-up done backstage.
Once the stage is lit, sit back and enjoy the story-play being performed in all its glory and get a taste of India’s rich culture and tradition.
