You can add a little romance to your holiday in Srinagar at Dal Lake. Picture this: you are relaxing with your beloved, hands entwined, on a cushioned shikara (wooden boat) that’s being rowed fluidly, passing other canopied boats. All around, the placid waters of Dal Lake in Kashmir are gently waving, and the rolling mountains are creating an enchanting reflection on the azure lake. The setting is so picture-perfect, especially during sunset, that it will feel like a dream.

A shikara to Kashmir is what a gondola is to Venice – a signature experience that you just can’t do without. A line of boats crowd the lakes in Srinagar, but Dal Lake is the prettiest and the most popular one. Interestingly, the Shikara communities have lived on houseboats and shikaras at Dal for a very long time and the lake has everything from vegetables shops to doctors.
The floating gardens on the periphery of the lake are a lovely sight with a blanket of green vegetation on the surface of the waters. There’s a sprinkle of lilies and lotuses on the lake in spring, and you can buy bouquets for your partner from the floating shops. You can also take the shikara to go to the lush Shalimar Garden and Nishat Garden – it’s a great mode of transportation. Even bird watchers will be enchanted to see feathered companions fill the skies above this lake.
