Wealthy merchants belonging to the Marwari community once inhabited the region of Shekhawati. And as it is believed, these merchants who built the vast havelis, brought some of the finest fresco artists from across the state to simply outdo one another and quench their egos. Interestingly, in this race of projecting oneself as more affluent and rich, what they did not realize was what a magnificent open-air art gallery they were creating.
Step into a haveli and you’ll be awed by the unbelievably intricate and beautiful ultramarine murals and mirror work that ornately decorate the regal architecture; the magnificent entrances, domes, walls, arches, gateways and hallways. Each one of these murals is a recital from ancient mythology to contemporary history, mapping the evolving traditions and lifestyles over the centuries. And can you believe it? Vegetable colours were initially used to create such masterpieces of art. Visit the region in the month of February during the vibrant Shekhawati festival and you shall be in for a visual treat!
