India was the first country outside the United Kingdom to take up the game of golf. The oldest golf club, The Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) was established in 1829. By the turn of the 19th Century, there were already a dozen golf clubs in India. The founding of the RCGC was followed by the now defunct Royal Bombay Golf Club in 1842, the Bangalore Golf Club in 1878 and the Madras Gymkhana Club in 1886.
